Doner Wins Silver Effie for Coleman’s “The Original Social Networking Site” Campaign

Winning an Effie for The Coleman Company is just one more story we’ll tell around a campfire, sitting in our Coleman chairs and making s’mores.

The story started around a campfire. Well, not a real one. It was camping enthusiasts sitting on Coleman sleeping bags eating s’mores that were melted in a microwave, telling us about their great camping experiences and the memories they made. This was our research. And the camping stories we heard helped us realize that long before people got together on a website, they got together at a campsite. That makes The Coleman Campsite, The Original Social Networking Site.

We used social networking sites to request camping footage and real pictures. And we created TV spots, print ads and iPhone apps that got people blogging and sharing. (Coleman is all about getting people together and sharing, so they loved this.)

The campaign exceeded all of our expectations. In a down market, Coleman achieved significant sales increases and equally important, got increased display visibility in all of their key retail accounts. To say thanks, Coleman gave us the most comfortable chairs that you’ve ever tried. And we sat in them, cracked open a beer and toasted a Silver Effie for a brand that we love. Ok, we had more than one beer. But you get the idea.

Our Awards Streak Continues

We’ve had two great bits of news on the awards front this week.

Our Kindle print campaign is a 2010 One Show Merit Award winner. This campaign continued the magazine story after the jump onto the Kindle e-reader in the adjacent ad. The ceremony takes place on April 13 in New York City during Creative Week.

If that wasn’t exciting enough, our Effie Award streak continues. We’ve been notified that our “The Original Social Networking Site” campaign for The Coleman Company will be an Effie Award winner this year. Of course, to find out exactly which award it won, we’ll have to attend the June 8 gala in New York City.

DONER WINS CAPLES BRONZE FOR COLEMAN APPS

Our iPhone apps for Coleman win again! Last night our lantern app for The Coleman Company “Social Networking Site” campaign won a bronze trophy in the mobile category at the 32nd annual John Caples International Awards. The Caples are the top award in direct response marketing, which means you can’t win on creative awesomeness alone. You have to have results, which means you and your client get what advertising is all about. And that you have some idea how to calculate a return rate. For The Coleman Company, Inc., we created a full-scale branding campaign to claim the Coleman campsite as the “Original Social Networking Site.” It brings to life how the 109-year-old brand helps people have fun and make memories during their favorite outdoor experiences, be it a weekend getaway, iPhone campout or even Foo Camp. It’s the first Coleman campaign by Doner since we were named agency of record in late 2008. Campaign elements include TV and print creative. We also created two free iPhone apps, including Coleman’s Pocket Lantern that turns your iPhone into a handheld light and Coleman’s Creepy Campfire Tales made up of 15 age-based scary stories.
